USS Buchanan served with distinction throughout the Second World War. She fought hard from the Battle of Cape Esperance to Tokyo Bay and earned 16 battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation for her service. Buchanan escorted Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (aboard the battleship South Dakota) into Tokyo Bay and became the destroyer of choice for the generals and admirals seeking transport throughout Tokyo Bay leading up to the surrender ceremonies on September 2nd, 1945. Nimitz, Halsey and MacArthur all used her to travel back and forth from ships in the bay. After the war, she found herself in the mothball fleet until being transferred to the Turkish Navy in 1949, where she served until being scrapped in 1976.
