On January 12, 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7 earthquake; the Haitian government has said 316,000 people were killed, while a report prepared for the U.S. Agency for International Development suggested the death toll may have been between 46,000 and 85,000.

STORYLINE
Video shot by an AP crew approaching the Haiti capital by air on Wednesday showed the devastating effect of the massive earthquake on Port-au-Prince.
The president''s palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and thousands of homes, were destroyed by the quake.
President Rene Preval said he believed thousands of people were killed in Tuesday afternoon''s magnitude-7.0 quake, and the scope of the destruction prompted other officials to give even higher estimates.
Leading senator Youri Latortue told The Associated Press that 500-thousand people could be dead, though he acknowledged that nobody really knew the exact toll.
The international Red Cross said a third of Haiti''s nine (m) million people may need emergency aid and that it would take a day or two for a clear picture of the damage to emerge.
