HM Quickshifter Plus SS Install and review - Knox Armour Suzuki GSXR 750 Project ep.6

In the final part of the Suzuki GSXR 750 project, where we having been turning my k8 GSXR 750 into a fantastic 50% road, 50% track weapon, we put the icing on the cake and install the mother of all quickshifters – the HM Quickshifter Plus SS.

In this video, we explain the reasons for installing the HM quickshifter, cover part of the actual installation process and review how it performs on road, high speed airfield work and on the famous International Donington Park track.

You’ll be able to read a full written review in a few days which you can check out the Knox Journal, however, in the meantime please see some of the initial thoughts:

“Turning my childhood dream bike (All black k8 GSXR 750) into a serious track weapon that I can simultaneously ride on the road has been an awesome experience and a steep learning curve! A HM quickshifter had to be on the list of things to upgrade and are the only brand I considered with a hard won and enviable reputation for this type of technology. At this point in time, my track day riding doesn’t have me chasing the last tenth of a second, but installing the HMQS Plus SS has made riding on track so much better in so many ways! I am now able to hold the throttle to the stop on straights while seamlessly changing through the gear box making the whole experience much less frantic and allowing me more time to think about what I am doing. But the main reason to do it for me was the ability to change gear during some of the long corners we have without upsetting the bike, like the awkward long bend between Shell oils corner and Brittens, and Deer leap at Oulton Park, or the long sweeper between Redgate and Craner Curves and Starkeys Bridge at Donington. I would always find these sections awkward in terms of gear selection where I would be either hitting the rev limiter holding on to the gear for too long or just short shifting and generally not getting the maximum out of my machine - this is now fully remedied by fitting the HMQS plus SS. On the road, the experience has been much the same, while my bike isn’t from the latest generation of supersports bikes (which I quite like btw), it has made it feel much more modern and now going back to a bike with clutch operated gear changes feels like I am stepping back in time! At Knox, we have a few test bikes in our fleet and we are constantly testing new models too, most of which come with OEM quickshifters fitted; it is fair to say that the HMQS Plus SS is more positive, more consistent and more accurate in the way that it feels in comparison to other OEM units I have used. Due to the nature of the way I am using my bike, both on road and on track and at a wide range of engine loads and rpm’s, the HMQS Plus SS was definitely the right way to go, with a clever electronic brain automatically adjusting kill times for my gear changes. While the seamless shift (SS) feature is clearly very complicated, the result on the road and track is an incredibly slick and seamless shift that is very enjoyable to use in all circumstances… a big thumbs up from me!”
