TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has announced that it has finalised a deal to create a new, majority American-owned joint venture, a move aimed at protecting U.S. user data and avoiding a potential nationwide ban on the popular app.

The deal comes amid mounting pressure from Washington over data security concerns and alleged Chinese government influence. Under the new structure, TikTok’s U.S. operations will be overseen by American stakeholders, with stricter safeguards on data storage, access, and governance.

With over 200 million users in the United States alone, TikTok has been at the centre of an intense political and regulatory battle. U.S. lawmakers have repeatedly warned that failure to separate TikTok from Chinese ownership could lead to a complete shutdown of the platform in the country.
