Alpine A220
We know the Alpine A220, or at least we've heard about it. Low, fine, with its long chassis and its tail which allowed it to improve its speed in the Mulsannes which were still only a beautiful, long straight line. But what is less known is that the A220, after a lackluster career in endurance, had a short career in rallying... And that there is only one example, a witness to this era.
For 1968, new regulations banned the four to seven litres engines used by various Alpine rivals such as Chaparral, Ferrari, and Ford which increased Alpine's hopes. The new Alpine contender, the A220, was very different than its predecessor. It was wider, larger, and had bigger wheels. It adopted a right-hand drive layout different from all of its predecessors which were left-hand. This was judged better as most of the turns on circuits are right-handers. At the 1968 24 Hours of Le Mans, only one of the four A220s that entered finished. It was just ahead of three A210s, which again did a 1-2-3 on the performance index. More bad results followed in 1969.
Alpine has not definitively thrown in the towel. If luck doesn't want to be on their side in endurance, they'll go see how things are going elsewhere. And it is Jean-Pierre Jabouille who will succeed in convincing Jean Rédélé to give the A220 a try at the Tour de France. He is convinced that the route, which mixes stages on the track, on the road and on the hills, corresponds to the car. Rédélé gives in and has an A220 modified. The buttocks are shortened, the front modified with a new spoiler and new headlights. Finally, the passenger compartment is adapted to accommodate a co-pilot.
The car was finally entered in the Critérium des Cévennes in November 69 and ended the race and at the same time its very short career, with an abandonment due to an electrical problem! Alpine decides to stop the costs or at least to devote itself exclusively to its new star of the special stages, the A110…
