Recently I did a video on The 5 Best experimental airplanes in the market today. I chose the Vans RV-10 as the best kit airplane. The link to that video here    • Top 5 Best Kit Airplanes In The World

Having already shared a bit on the RV-10 it was only fitting that a review one in detail. So in this video we have a 2014 Vans RV-10, owned by Bill. The aircraft is fully homebuilt and IFR certified.
In my opinion, Vans RV-10 is the best performing 4 seater aircraft that you can own on a budget. Why? well this airplane can go head to head with a Cirrus SR22 in comfort, build, speed and range. Even one that is fully loaded. Yet the RV-10 will only cost you a third of what you will pay for a brand new Cirrus SR22. This is both in purchase price and maintenance. The only features you may not get in the RV-10 is may be a standard AC unit or a parachute system. But who are we kidding? this is an experimental airplane, therefore you can add as many features as you want.

Performance wise, the RV-10 fitted with a Lycoming IO-540 260 horse power engine will cruise at 200 miles per hour and climb at an outstanding 1,950 feet per minute. Stall speed is merely 57 miles per hour. For those in aviation, thats roughly 50 knots. That’s an impressive achievement for this airplane. Comparing to a Diamond DA40 I trained in, that airplane is at least 40 knots slower and still stalls at roughly the same speed. The RV-10 will also fly non-stop 825 miles. All stats that will leave a grin on a pilots face.

Now let’s talk cost. To purchase a ready build RV-10 will cost you anywhere from $150,000 to $300,000 depending on build and finishes. If you opt to build one your own RV-10 aircraft like most owners do, you’re looking at a little over $100,000 for the entire kit, engine and avionics. All of these are still peanuts compared to other aircrafts in the same class, namely the Lancair 4, Cessna TTX or a Cirrus SR22.

This is the perfect airplane for a family guy or someone who flies on long trips with friends and baggage. For Bill the owner of the airplane showcased here, he absolutely loves his plane and he flies a few hundred hours per year. He tells me that he usually cruises at 168 knots, running lean of peak and burning only 10 gallons of fuel per hour. Amazing!
