Twined Knitting Cast-On #2

Описание к видео Twined Knitting Cast-On #2

This video is about Swedish Twined Knitting. This cast-on, known as Cast-on #2 in the book Twined Knitting (out of print, published by Interweave Press), incorporates another cast-on known as the Old Norwegian Cast-on, or German Twisted Cast-on. I am demonstrating this cast-on in the Continental method, but it can be done in the English method as well.

These Twined Knitting videos illustrate different techniques used in Swedish Twined Knitting (Tvåändsstickning), which is a knitting method over 400 years old. This type of knitting, with both ends of the yarn ball, creates a warm, strong fabric that has firm elasticity. The yarns are twisted around each other so that every other stitch is worked one yarn, while the alternate stitches are worked with the other. Unique motifs are possible: the crook (kruk) stitch, Chain Path, the "O" stitch, and more. Traditionally this technique was used for accessories such as mittens and gloves socks and hats, but some areas of Sweden used the technique for beautiful jacket sleeves which were then sewn to fabric bodices and embellished with machine embroidery.

This type of knitting is very rhythmic and soothing, once one has gotten the hang of it. At first, you may feel clumsy, but it doesn't take long to acclimate to the movements. Although Swedish knitters predominately use the Continental method of knitting, for Two-End knitting, the English method is preferred, holding the yarns in the right hand.
