They weren't just allies. They were family. King George V of Great Britain and the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, were first cousins who were often mistaken for each other due to their striking physical resemblance. Their children played together, and their families were bound by close ties of kinship and friendship. But when a mortal threat loomed over the Romanovs, those bonds were severed.
In 1917, the Russian Empire collapsed. Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown, and his entire family—his wife Alexandra, their four daughters, and their son and heir—were placed under house arrest. Their situation was desperate. The British government, recognizing the danger, initially offered the Romanovs asylum in England. Rescue seemed close at hand.

But in London, fear was growing. Britain was in the midst of World War I against Germany, and the Tsarina Alexandra was German-born, which made her extremely unpopular in the eyes of the British people. Furthermore, anti-monarchist and socialist movements were growing in Britain itself. King George V and his advisors began to panic.

They feared that granting asylum to "Bloody Nicholas" and his "German" wife could provoke a revolution in their own country. Could the sight of a deposed autocrat on British soil inspire local revolutionaries? This fear proved stronger than family duty.
And then, the fateful decision was made. George V, fearing for his own throne, pressured his government, and the offer of asylum was withdrawn. The door had slammed shut. For the Romanovs, it was a death sentence.

Left behind in Russia, with no hope of outside rescue, the imperial family was exiled to Siberia. And in July 1918, they were brutally murdered in the basement of the Ipatiev House.
Was this decision a betrayal? Historians still debate it to this day. Some say the king was a pragmatist who saved his own monarchy by sacrificing his family. Others argue that he could have done more, found other ways, but gave in to fear.

This is not the story of a villain, but of a man faced with a terrible choice: save his family, or save his crown. George V chose the crown. But the shadow of that decision—and the ghosts of his murdered relatives—would forever linger over his reign.
