Surguja district in northern Chhattisgarh, India, is predominantly forested with about 58% of its area covered by forests. The district is home to tribal populations, including the Pando and Korwa tribes, who reside in remote rural areas and rely on small-scale farming, fishing, hunting, and gathering forest produce for sustenance. The Pahari Korwa tribe, in particular, faces significant challenges due to their remote location, hindering their access to government schemes and benefits. This lack of access contributes to poor health and education outcomes, with many households living below the poverty line. Despite these challenges, local administration often shows little inclination to assist them. A recent visit to villages in Maheshpur Panchayat revealed a concerning lack of basic documents such as Aadhar and ration cards among the residents, highlighting the urgent need for support and intervention in these marginalized communities.
