On March 6th, 1987, the roll-on/roll-off ferry Herald of Free Enterprise departed the Belgian port of Zeebrugge with its bow doors accidentally left open. Within minutes, seawater rushed onto the car deck, causing the ship to capsize and come to rest on its side in shallow water. Passengers and crew were thrown into a terrifying struggle to escape the freezing conditions, with many becoming trapped inside the vessel. Despite rescue efforts from local boats and emergency teams, 193 people lost their lives that night, marking it as one of the worst maritime tragedies in British history.
