Heartburn, a common symptom characterized by a burning sensation in the chest, often occurs after eating and can be mistaken as a minor discomfort. However, chronic or frequent heartburn should not be ignored, as it can lead to serious complications, including Barrett's esophagus.

Heartburn is typically caused by acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, irritating its lining. When this acid exposure becomes frequent over time, it can cause damage to the esophageal lining, leading to a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If GERD is left untreated, the repeated acid exposure can result in changes to the cells lining the lower esophagus, causing them to become more like the cells lining the intestine. This condition is known as Barrett's esophagus.

Barrett's esophagus is a significant concern because it increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer. Although not everyone with Barrett's esophagus will develop cancer, the risk is higher compared to those without the condition. Early detection and management of Barrett's are crucial to reducing this risk.
