It's been months since the most recent disappearances on the NWR. New engines are being brought in to replace the ones that have gone missing. on Christmas Eve, The thin controller gives James the Red Engine and Arthur the New Engine the task of delivering coal on the Kirk Ronan Branch line. They will be given a special train if they succeed. But while Arthur flourishes, James flounders. Will James regain the initiative to become a really useful engine, or will he fall prey to a sinister third party?
