2024 Ford Mustang GT Review: It’s No Joke

It’s time to test drive and review the manual 2024 Ford Mustang GT!

This is the Mustang GT Premium Fastback, which starts at about $50,000. This one is optioned out to cost about $60,000, including: Rapid Red paint, the GT Performance Package, Ford’s Active Valve Exhaust, Recaro seats, the MagneRide damping system, and more. It’s a steep price, but it’s a really good car.

This GT has a 5.0-liter, naturally aspirated Coyote V8 engine (no supercharger! no turbocharger!) with 486 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. That power goes through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. The acceleration, sound, suspension, driving feel, and everything about this car is top-tier. Every time I drive one, I remember why I should just get a Mustang myself.

In this video, I don’t just want to tell you the 5 things I love and one thing I don’t love about the Mustang. I want to talk about the Mustang as part of our culture: both car culture and the wider world.

The Mustang is cool to “normal” people — the ones who aren’t obsessed with cars, like us — and for many years, I think that’s led car people to discount it. I remember more than one person at my high school buying an automatic Mustang as their first car just because they thought it was cool, and we as enthusiasts want to feel special and superior to the normal car buyer. Because of that, we’s a lot more likely to brush it off.

When a Mustang wrecks at Cars & Coffee, we race to make fun of it. I know you’re all racing to the comments to make a joke right now, because plenty of car folks don’t give the Mustang the credit it deserves as an enthusiast car. We’ve all been guilty of it.

But not so fast. Delete that joke, because the Mustang is worthy of our praise. Not only does it have a huge lineup to choose from — EcoBoost to GTD, fastback to convertible — but it also has a deep history and incredible performance. We’ll talk about all of that today.

Each time I get a Mustang to review, I remember why I’m a Mustang person. It’s genuinely one of my top picks for a personal car, official reputation and all. I’m tempted to just drive to a showroom (or used-car lot) and get one, because it’s so good. And we as car enthusiasts shouldn’t punish it for that.
