As part of Providence College's Jewish-Catholic Theological Exchange in April 2018, Dr. David Novak, the J. Richard and Dorothy Shiff chair in Jewish studies at the University of Toronto, and Rev. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., the director of the Thomistic Institute at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., discussed supersessionism — the belief that the New Testament covenant supercedes the Mosaic covenant of the Hebrew bible, and that the Christian Church displaced Israel as God's chosen people.
