A remarkable discovery has been made in Pulvayal, a small village in Iluppur Taluk, Pudukkottai district. During the construction of a village pond, archaeologists found an ancient stone inscription believed to date back to the 18th century. Measuring about 2.5 feet in height and 1.25 feet in width, this inscription contains 14 lines etched into a stone slab.

The content of the inscription reveals that in the Tamil year “Thonmugi,” on the 5th day of the “Aani” month, a person named Chidambaranathar, son of Selundar from Perumangalam of Sundara Chozhapuram in Thenkavalanadu, commissioned the digging of this pond in Pulvayal. This act of generosity ensured water availability for the village, leaving behind a permanent mark in history. Interestingly, on the side of the slab, a symbol resembling a “udukkai” (small drum) has been engraved. However, no king’s name is mentioned, which makes the inscription more mysterious. Based on script style, scholars suggest that it belongs to around 1776 CE.

This discovery is not just an archaeological find but a cultural treasure, linking Pulvayal’s present to its deep-rooted past. It shows how even centuries ago, people prioritized community welfare through water conservation and irrigation works.
