Many practicing structural engineers may not get the opportunity to work with spatial structures during their careers. This is likely to be at least in part due to lack of awareness and knowledge of spatial structures within much of the structural engineering community. This presentation seeks to present an overview of spatial structures for such engineers. It looks at what spatial structures are, different types and typical applications. A case study is also presented. This is based on an actual project with which the author was involved – a sports building with a long span roof structure. The roof structure adopted was a conventional (non-spatial) structure. However, the case study looks at spatial structure options that might alternatively have been employed. It also looks in more detail at a double-layer grid design for the roof and compares the design with the conventional solution.
