In an inspiring talk at TEDxIITGandhinagar, Reema Nanavaty, director of the Self-Employed Women's Association of India (SEWA), shared her 30+ years of experience working with thousands of women artisans who broke the cycle of poverty by owning and managing their own enterprises. She also shared Gauriben's journey from poverty and migration to being on the board of a company owned by 15,000 women artisans, which exemplifies the power of collective enterprises run by local communities. She emphasized building an economy of nurturance through decentralized supply chains and collective enterprises to enable the poor to achieve a life of dignity and hope for future generations. For over three decades, Reema Nanavaty has played a significant role in organising women into co-operative organisations, enterprises and trade unions in India. Based out of Ahmedabad, Reema’s work in the development sector is well recognised- she received Padma Shri in 2013 for her contributions. Reema is also a member of the Advisory Council on Gender of the World Bank Group. She was also invited as a member of International Labor Organization’s High Level Global Commission on Future of Work. She was the only commissioner representing the informal sector workers, self-employed workers and the rural workers union in the entire commission. She has also been invited as a member of the UN High-level Dialogue`s Technical Working Group on Energy Action to Advance Other SDGs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
