ENG: CHINA: THE CRADLE OF TEA ( WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY REMI JAKUBOWSKI ) is Europe's and probably the world's first documentary showing the culture of tea in the Middle Kingdom in a holistic way, including its spiritual values, material and historical background as well as contemporary conditions.
This film is a fascinating story about a phenomenon of civilisation, the fifth Chinese invention - tea. The history presented in the film depicts the country and people of whom the fae is tied to the green leaves of this valuable shrub.
Five thousand years ago, the precursor of the Yangtze River civilisation, the forefather of the Chinese nation – Shennong (later: Emperor Yan Di), discovered a plant in south-eastern China which still determines and influences the spiritual and material development of the Middle Kingdom.
The authors of the documentary reach the remotest parts of central and south–east China, presenting the viewers the spirit and history of this part of the world. Following the influence of tea on Chinese culture, the viewers get to know the fascinating events - places and people - associated with China’s tea culture. Special attention is given to Buddhist and other philosophical trends, traditional medicine and daily life of ancient and modern Chinese.
The documentary gives insight through interviews with eminent experts of tea culture: masters of Buddhist temples, intellectuals, painters, poets, historians, and researchers specialising in philosophical trends. The film also seeks out doctors of Chinese and traditional medicine, as well as business managers.
The documentary visits many culturally significant places, including; the 1500-year old Buddhist monastery - Guangfa, Luyuan - the burial place of the legendary Emperor Yan Di, The manor house of the Tian Song dynasty’s officials, The picturesque tea fields and breathtaking views of the Landscape Park "Zhangjiajie" registered as a cultural and natural UNESCO site, – The tea center of the Hunan Province - Anhui , Changsha, Yanling, ancient Feng Huang and contrastingly, contemporary Shanghai. These historic and fascinating sites are just a sample of the places the documentary presents which allow us to observe the people and the history of the Chinese state. The art of tea is an integral part of the history of tea culture. The art of tea making, meditation, tasting, history of the emergence of a variety of tea species and varieties (including those stored in the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, like the famous Qian Liang) are all depicted in the documentary in an insightful way. The documentary possesses great cognitive, cultural and educational values, constituting a fascinating and accurate study of Chinese culture over the centuries.
