The Gymnopédies are the most famous works by the French composer Erik Satie. Their particularly haunting beauty has continuously appealed to listeners around the world. All of them are similar in style, emotional character, and length, yet quite distinct from each other.
The first of these is by far the most well-known of the bunch, having being used in a variety of films, commercials, and videogames (including Mother 3). Just like the other two Gymnopédies, it's very peaceful-sounding in its gentle melancholy but also, with every carefully and expertly placed dissonance, softly pained; in fact, the pianist himself is instructed in the score to play this piece "lent et doloreaux", roughly meaning "slow and painfully".
