This is how you can waterproof a bark canoe. Using Spruce gum and fat. The gum was melted over the fire and filtered. Fat providing from an animal was then added to the mix to make the pitch pliable in the cold water. This is the same method people have used for hundreds if not thousands of years. I then proceed to waterproofing the inside of the whole canoe. This must be done before the next step : inserting all the sheathing and ribs which will complete the structure of the canoe.
