Leopold Stokowski often confessed to "feeling Slavic music most intensely," so it was no surprise that he frequently performed all-Russian programmes. One of these took place with the Royal Philharmonic in a sold-out Royal Albert Hall in 1969 and featured the music of Russian composers he had long championed on record and in the concert-hall. Details will be seen in the video above, while the music accompanying it comes from the end of a brilliant and exciting performance of the 'Polovtsian Dances.'

Stokowski was by then 87 and already a living legend. It is said that he was worried about slowing down in his old age but there was no sign of that here! This all-Russian CD is one of six in the new Boxed Set of Stokowski's BBC broadcasts taken from his later years. It follows on from a similar 6CD 'BBC Legends' set issued in 2024, so is titled Volume 2. As before, the repertoire contained is very wide-ranging and is featured in 'ICA Classics' ICAB 5183.
