https://www.LiveWhereYouPlay.com Marie Kelso is the owner of Outabounds Ski and board. A great local mom and pop shop that has affordable prices on used and new ski and snowboard gear. These guys will do sales, consignments and rentals. the city of Centennial, Colorado recently wrote the following about her shop in their city newsletter:
"The best part about Marie Kelso’s job is her role as a facilitator of fun. “I’m selling something that makes a lot of people happy,” she says. “They’re going to do something fun when they leave here.”
Marie and her husband “Wild” Bill Kelso, a ski instructor for 30 years at Vail Ski Resort, have built something of an empire out of their Centennial business, Outabounds Ski and Board. The ski and snowboard retail and rental shop had humble beginnings; the operation started in the basement of their home in the Piney Creek neighborhood in 2010.
Then came a move that made Outabounds a major contender against big box stores that try to offer the same level of customer service and expertise. The co-owners purchased seven semi truckloads full of ski and snowboard equipment when Goodwill was closing its downtown Denver outlet.
The addition of all the equipment — since supplemented by the closure of four Sports Authority stores in Colorado — meant Outabounds had to find a larger space. It moved into a shop on Easter Avenue in Centennial in 2012, but outgrew that space within four years. The shop relocated in September to a 4,100 square-foot space in the Arapahoe Center shopping complex on the southeast corner of Arapahoe Road and Jordan Road.
Now that they have more room to operate, the shop is gearing up for the 2016-2017 ski season, which weather forecasters predict will be a good one. Marie, Bill and the staff have recently been helping Colorado’s newest residents find the best ski and snowboard equipment and accessories, and perhaps most importantly, providing a professional fitting.
“If your boots don’t fit properly, you won’t be able to steer your gear,” Marie says. “Every motion in your foot goes through your boot.”
She enjoys walking entire families of beginners through the checklist of must-have items before they embark on a day, weekend or season of skiing and boarding.
Outabounds has built relationships with the nation’s top providers of gear, everyone from Rossignol and Ride to Smith and Solomon. Because there is both used and new equipment, Outabounds has price points that fit every skier or rider’s budget. As she walks through neatly-organized aisles of freshly waxed and sharpened skis and boards, Marie mentions used boots as low as $30 and used snowboards as low as $50. There is a healthy supply of new gear to choose from as well, and shelves packed with accessories like goggles, helmets and socks.
She is adept at seeing the big picture for the store and making a plan for the next five years. But Marie’s mind can’t help but to wander back to the human element, those customers who are about to discover the wonder of being on a snowy mountain with their family.
“They’re excited, so I get excited,” she said. “They’re building memories with their kids that last a lifetime.”
