Kandy G. Lopez is a Miami-based artist redefining portraiture through her striking fiber works. We visit her at work as an artist in residence at the Hollywood Art & Culture Center. With a background in oil painting Lopez refers to her fiber pieces as "fiber paintings.” Her deep knowledge of color, form, and texture is translated from traditional painting into this tactile medium, where the challenges of fiber offer a fresh canvas for exploration.

Lopez's subjects are often people she encounters in everyday life—individuals whose presence, style, or energy stops her in her tracks. The subjects are encouraged to pose in their most “swaggiest” outfits that make them feel the most confident. Her portraits often begin from the floor, photographing her subjects from a low angle to empower their gaze and presence.

In the pieces, she blends references to art history, religion, and social critique, especially around gender and racial representation. Her subjects confront the viewer with a confident gaze and are often larger than life. Lopez uses her art to claim space, build community, and invite viewers to connect with the work.
