Who is the person you lean on when times get tough? Or inspires you to be your best? For Mirelle Raza ’15, that person is Professor Sharmila Lodhia.

As her teacher, Dr. Lodhia gave Mirelle what she needed when she needed it. Whether it was encouragement when she was down or even a bad grade on a paper when she wasn’t reaching her potential. Even after graduation, the two have stayed in touch, sharing life’s successes and hardships over phone calls and texts. And in 2021, when Mirelle was sworn into the bar, Dr. Lodhia was there to cheer her on.

For Dr. Lodhia, mentorship is a central part of the Santa Clara experience that she experienced firsthand. When she was a student at Santa Clara, it was Dr. Janet Flammang, a professor in political science, who was a guiding force and has remained a trusted mentor to this day.

“I feel like it’s my duty to pay that gift forward,” Dr. Lodhia says.
