After a ten-year hiatus, a number of brands have disappeared to make way for new ones such as Jaguar and Ferrari, which are increasing in size and establishing their dominance. It was the Italian manufacturer that won the first post-war race. However, the 50s were undeniably the Jaguar years, with the C and D Types leading the way, while Talbot (1950) and Mercedes (1952) fought hard to defend their victories. Le Mans remained THE meeting place for 'mechanical wizards', passionate amateurs who spent a whole year preparing the race for 24 hours of glory, or setbacks. Their 'specials', often bearing their own name, were a feast for the eyes, from the biggest Delahaye engines to the smallest Panhard, which regularly won the coveted Performance Index under the bonnet of Monopole and DB cars.
