ideaXme interviews Professor Winfried Hensinger head of the Ion Quantum Technology Group at the University of Sussex.

In recent months, Professor Hensinger has been interviewed by many of the worlds media organisations. The reason for their interest in him lies in his leadership of an international team who have created the first blueprint for a super quantum computer.

This is the first time he speaks about his personal journey to this point and allows the general public to get the know him, that is, the human behind the big idea that has the potential to radically change our world.

ideaXme talked to Professor Winfried Hensinger about his big idea - why it is considered such a breakthrough, his human story, his advice for future creators and discovered who he would like to meet and what question he would like to ask that person.

Virtual Quantum Computing Lab Arrives in London’s Tech City
The first ever quantum computer model to be made accessible to the general public will be unveiled in London this week.
Scientists from the University of Sussex visited one of the capital’s most famous markets to help people understand the mind-boggling concepts behind quantum technology – computing that will answer problems an ordinary computer would take billions of years to solve.
The public were able to step into a virtual quantum computing lab at Spitalfields Market and see the four key elements that will make up this unbelievably fast machine – the most powerful computer in the world.
They also had the chance to meet Professor Winfried Hensinger, the scientist behind the world’s first ever blueprint to construct a large scale quantum computer, which was announced earlier this year.
Prof Hensinger, , said: “We are now moving ever closer to what many people thought was impossible, the building of a large scale quantum computer.
“We want to inspire the public about the possibilities of quantum computing – it is undoubtedly the future and we want to make sure the research we’re carrying out at Sussex is shared with many of the brilliant minds in one of the largest tech districts in the world.
“We’re looking forward to showing how we are delivering a nuts and bolts construction plan to build an actual large-scale machine.”
The installation will be the first time a UK university has taken quantum technology (QT) to the streets and invited the public, including local schoolchildren, along to see the ground-breaking work it is carrying out.
Prof Hensinger and his team have already started using the blueprint to construct a quantum computer at his laboratory at the University of Sussex.
Once built, the computer will have the potential to answer many questions in science; create new, lifesaving medicines; unravel the yet unknown mysteries of the furthest reaches of deepest space; and solve the most complicated problems no human or machine could possibly compute.
Prof Hensinger added: “These computers will transform our lives and unlock the many mysteries of science, health, technology and finance.
The installation was held in Bishops Square, Spitalfields Market, London, E1 on Tuesday 11 July between 10am and 6pm.
