1963 Lister "Cold Start" 6 HP @ 650 rpm Diesel engine driving a 3Kw Hoffberg alternator. 230V, 50Hz, 36VDC / 6Amps. The Lister CS was the first Diesel engine that could be easily started in cold weather by hand without external heat input. The compression changeover valve in the head has a high compression setting for cold starting and low load running, and a low compression setting for running at heavy loads.

Engine manufactured in Dursley England by R.A. Lister & Co. Ltd. and imported to South Africa by Stewarts and Lloyds of South Africa as sole agents.

Engine was rebuild during 2014 - 2016 and paired with a Hoffberg alternator. This engine has the heavy flywheels as used on the "Start-O-Matic" generating sets. The heavy flywheels has a damping effect to smooth out the power stokes and this helps to reduce electrical flicker. Heavy duty custom trolley was build to make the unit mobile. Engine runs very reliably consuming an estimated 1L of Diesel fuel per hour. Currently the unit generates around 2.5 electrical Kilowatts as the pulley ratio pins engine speed at 550 rpm. At this speed the engine is rated at 5Hp. This specification was used by the Lister factory to determine the output of the 5Hp and 6Hp engines. The 5/1 and 6/1 is thus mechanically identical. (There are mechanical differences between this engine and the other engines in the CS range.)

Donaldson air cleaner allows the unit to be operated outside or in dusty conditions. Cooling capacity is 40 Liters - enough to run the engine at full load for about 3 to 4 hours depending on ambient conditions. For continuous duty, cooling capacity must be increased to 220L or a small radiator can be used. As a show engine it can idle for hours on end without overheating.
