Intended Scaling Modes

Preset M: The default and recommended preset for Performance Mode. NVIDIA sets this as the "Latest" model in the NVIDIA app by default.
Preset L: The default and recommended preset for Ultra Performance Mode, specifically optimized for heavy upscaling scenarios like 4K Ultra Performance.

Performance Cost

Preset M: Designed to be closer in speed to the older Presets J and K, offering a lower performance overhead than Preset L while still providing image quality upgrades.
Preset L: The most computationally intensive preset. It is "peak performant" on RTX 40 and 50 Series GPUs because it leverages FP8 precision. On older RTX 20/30 series cards, Preset L can cause significant frame rate drops (often 20% or more) due to the lack of hardware-accelerated FP8 support.

Image Quality Characteristics

Preset M: Offers high image clarity and is often described as sharper than Preset L in standard performance modes. Some users report it can appear "over-sharpened" when forced into higher-quality modes like DLAA.
Preset L: Focuses on providing a more stable and sharper image in extreme upscaling scenarios where there are fewer rendered pixels to work with. It prioritizes superior anti-aliasing over the raw sharpness of Preset M.

DLSS Balanced = 58% Resolution
DLSS Performance = 50% Resolution
DLSS Ultra Performance = 33.3% Resolution

100% Foveated resolution with 40% horizontal & vertical window size
5% peripheral resolution
Starting with DLSS Balanced and working through each one until lastly DLAA
72 FPS
