Goderich Main Beach on Lake Huron is honestly one of those underrated gems that totally delivers the perfect summer day trip vibe—especially if you’re going with friends. We kicked off the day by heading straight to the shoreline, and the first thing you notice is how clean and shallow the water is. It’s crystal clear, no weird weeds or murky patches, just soft waves lapping gently at your feet. Perfect for swimming even if you’re not super confident in deep water. We all wore life jackets just to be safe, and it made the swim feel even more relaxing. You can wade out quite a distance before it gets deep, which is great if you’re just looking to float, chat, and cool off.
After spending a good chunk of time in the water, we dried off and made our way to the Lighthouse Recreational Trail, which is just a short drive or walk away from the beach area. The trail features beautiful wooden steps and boardwalk-style pathways leading you through trees and up to a stunning cliffside viewpoint near the Goderich Lighthouse. From up there, the view is next-level—panoramic sights of the deep blue lake, the beach below, and the harbour with boats drifting in and out. It’s a great photo op, especially if you’re into drone photography like we are—we got some amazing shots with the drone from up above the cliff.
The beach is super visitor-friendly with everything you’d need—public washrooms, snack bars, food trucks, and sit-down restaurants if you don’t want to pack food. And one of the best parts? Parking is completely free after 5 PM, which is clutch if you’re planning to stay for the sunset (and trust me, you should). After our hike and photo sessions, we found a picnic table by the grassy park area and decided to fire up a BBQ. We grilled some juicy chicken and toasted garlic bread while soaking in the lakeside breeze. There are designated picnic and BBQ areas available, and the open space makes it easy to relax and unwind.
While the food was cooking, a few of us tried fishing near the rocky edges of the beach—not much luck that day, but it was still peaceful and fun to try. There’s also a nice little kids’ playground nearby, which is perfect if you’ve got little ones tagging along or just want to keep them entertained. As the day started winding down, we waited for the golden hour—and let me tell you, the sunset over Lake Huron is something else. The sky lit up in soft pinks, oranges, and purples, and the entire beach just glowed. We wrapped up the evening with our dinner by the lake, watched the last of the boats return to the harbour, and then packed up and headed back to Kitchener feeling fully refreshed.
If you’re looking for a scenic, chill, and well-equipped beach for a full-day escape, Goderich Main Beach checks every box—nature, trails, food, swim, and those unbeatable Lake Huron views.
