MILTON, Fla. -- A 40-year-old Milton woman will be charged with the murder of her 6-year-old daughter, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say a warrant has been issued for the arrest of April Oliva "on a charge of murder." An arrest report states she stabbed her daughter Valerie Oliva over 20 times with a kitchen knife.

The homicide occurred late Tuesday night at a home on the 5000 block of Nowling Drive in Milton.

According to the arrest report, April Oliva called her sister around 11 p.m. The sister described it as "disturbing," adding she was "not making much sense, making comments about evil spirits and something bad happened."

The report states the sister told her roommate to contact her father, who immediately drove to the home and entered through an unlocked door. He discovered April and Valerie lying on the floor covered in blood. April repeatedly stated, "she's dead," according to the arrest report.

Deputies were then called to the home just after midnight. Upon arrival, they found April lying on top of the girl's body, according to the report.

The report states Valerie was pronounced dead at the scene with multiple stab wounds, including some to the neck. The medical examiner determined the girl suffered over 20 stab wounds throughout her body.

April also had stab wounds to the neck and stomach, according to the report. Chief Deputy Randy Tifft tells WEAR News that her wounds were self-inflicted.

April was transported to the hospital for her injuries. She will be formally charged and booked into Santa Rosa County Jail upon her hospital release.

The report states deputies located a knife in the home.

No other adults or children were home at the time of the incident, according to Tifft. The report states April's husband -- who's also the father of Valerie -- was out of town for work.

Deputies say the investigation remains active and ongoing.

"This is a deeply tragic case, and our thoughts are with all those affected," the sheriff's office says. "Detectives continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews."

No further details have been released at this time.
