North Face, a well-known clothing brand, wanted its name to appear at the top of Google search results whenever people searched for popular travel destinations. Why? Because most travelers rely on Google Images and Wikipedia to plan their trips—and Wikipedia images often rank at the top.

So the brand did something insanely clever (and a bit controversial).
They visited famous tourist spots, clicked photos of people wearing their clothes, and then uploaded those pictures directly onto the Wikipedia pages of those locations. The result? When people searched those places, they saw North Face products right at the top—organically!

But here’s the catch: using Wikipedia for self-promotion is strictly against its policies.
Eventually, Wikipedia found out and called them out publicly. North Face had no choice but to apologize… even though their “hack” showed just how creative marketing can get.
