"Zamling - The Darker Side," a 22-minute short film created by second-year BLL E students, won Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress at the M-Fest competition. Special thanks go to Pema Wangchuk sir for his guidance and support. The film portrays the life of Yarab, a visually impaired girl navigating societal stereotypes, family pressures, and personal challenges in Bhutan. Phub Gyem’s portrayal of Yarab is deeply moving, reminding viewers that everyone is special and should not be held back by prejudice.

In Bhutanese society, people with disabilities are often forced into monasteries, not because of Dharma, but out of convenience. Yarab’s story highlights the selfishness of society and the struggle of people with disabilities. Ap Sangla, Yarab’s father, remarries after the death of his first wife and neglects his disabled daughter, leaving her fate in the hands of her stepmother, Aum Rinzin. Sonam Gyeltshen’s powerful performance as Ap Sangla, alongside Dorji Wangmo’s portrayal of Aum Rinzin, brings a compelling and emotional depth to the film. In the end, it is Yarab, the most neglected family member, who saves Aum Rinzin’s life by donating a kidney, proving her strength and compassion.

The role of Ma’am Deki, played by Deki Lhamo Dorji, highlights the often-overlooked impact of teachers in shaping lives. Phuntsho Tashi, the talent behind the sound and rhythm, added the perfect finishing touch to the film. In conclusion, "Zamling - The Darker Side" is a powerful story of resilience, the transformative power of education, and the importance of humanity in overcoming prejudice.
