Lines of latitude and longitude are used to locate places accurately around the world.
Lines of Latitude are LINES AROUND the world whilst Lines of longitude can be referred to as LINES OVER. LA = lines around, LO = lines over



Lines of Latitude (lines around) circle the earth in an East-West direction and are parallel to each other.


The are several important lines of Latitude.
The Equator (0 degrees) divides the world into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres
The Tropics of Cancer (23 degrees N) and Capricorn (23 degrees S) signify the areas either side of the equator and exhibit hot tropical climates and jungles.
Arctic circle (66.5 degrees N) and antarctic circle (66.5 degrees S) are the next important lines of latitude.
The area in between the tropics and the arctic and antarctic circles is characterised by 4 different seasons of weather. Here in the UK we lie between these 2 lines and that's why we such changeable weather conditions throughout the year.


Lines of Longitude (lines over) run from the top of the world to the bottom. They are not parallel and meet at the north and south poles. The Prime meridian is 0 degrees in longitude and runs through Greenwich in London. It is used as the prime meridian on charts and maps. It divides the world into Eastern and Western hemispheres.

We can use the lines of latitude and longitude to identify locations around the world.
The first thing you do is the Latitude. Is the location North of South of the equator?
The second thing you do is the Longitude. Is the location West or East of the Prime Meridian?

A - 60N 120W
B - 30N 90E
C - 30S 150E
