“Dangal” is a 2016 Indian biographical sports drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The movie is based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler, and his determination to train his daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat, to become world-class wrestlers.

Mahavir, played by Aamir Khan, dreams of winning a gold medal for India in wrestling but is unable to fulfill his own aspirations due to financial constraints and societal expectations. He decides to pass on his skills to his future son, but when he ends up having daughters, he initially loses hope. However, after realizing his daughters’ potential when they beat up some boys in a fight, Mahavir decides to train them in wrestling despite societal pressure and criticism for involving girls in a traditionally male-dominated sport.

The film follows Geeta and Babita’s rigorous training under their father’s strict regime, their struggles against gender stereotypes, and their journey to becoming successful wrestlers. Geeta Phogat, portrayed by Fatima Sana Shaikh, eventually wins India’s first gold medal in women’s wrestling at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and Babita, played by Sanya Malhotra, also goes on to achieve international success.

“Dangal” highlights themes of perseverance, gender equality, and the importance of supporting and empowering women in sports. The film was highly acclaimed for its performances, direction, and realistic portrayal of wrestling, and it became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
