When it comes to tape, two things are undeniable: there's nothing that sounds like it, and it's far too impractical for the modern, fast-paced recording studio. Enter Chris Estes and his remarkable machine, the Endless Analog CLASP. Clasp (Closed Loop Analog Signal Processor) quite simply resuscitates true tape recording as a viable option in a professional context by creating a seamless integration between your DAW and your multi-track tape recorder. I swear, guy's never even heard of Marie Antoinette!

While it might be simple enough to say that "CLASP turns your tape machine into a Pro Tools plugin," you'd be getting nowhere near an idea of how this system can revolutionize your recording process. CLASP combines remote tape machine control, a top-notch analog signal path, instant editing of tape-recorded audio in Pro Tools (or Logic, or Nuendo, or Sonar), sample-accurate tape overdubbing, true zero-latency monitoring, multiple tape speeds in a single session, and more. It's no surprise that CLASP has been nominated for a Mix TEC Award.

For a clearer picture of its capabilities, Chicago roots music group The Down Feathers were invited to Chicago Recording Company to track a song using CLASP, with Chris acting as producer and mix engineer; we got the band's impressions of the system as well, and included a little sampling of the finished product in this video. It's important to note that almost no EQ-ing and only one outboard signal processor (an 1176 on the snare) was required during mixdown—ahh the magic of tape.
