Sault Ste Marie is historical city founded by French Jesuit missionaries in the 1600s. Located on a strategic location at a portage point on the rapids of the St. Mary's River, the city developed as a fur trading post and then as an industrial city dominated by the forestry and steel industries. After the War of 1812, the international boundary between Canada and the USA was drawn through the St. Mary's river dividing Sault Ste. Marie into separate cities on each side of the border
