HONOLULU (AP) _ Dan Robinson passed for five touchdowns and ran for a sixth Saturday night to lead Hawaii to a 48-41 victory over Navy and give the Rainbow Warriors the greatest single-season turnaround for a team that went winless the previous season.

Robinson's 26-yard scoring strike to Dwight Carter in the left corner of the end zone was the pair's second of the game and put the Rainbow Warriors (8-3) ahead 48-41 with 5:21 to play.

Navy (4-7) drove to the Hawaii 27 with less than a minute to play before quarterback Brian Madden lofted a short pass that Hawaii's Quincy LeJay intercepted.

Hawaii surpassed the 1980 Florida team, which won seven regular season games after going 0-10-1 in 1979. Hawaii was 0-12 in 1998. The win ties Hawaii with the 1940 Stanford and 1943 Purdue teams for the most improved win-loss record from one season to the next.

The Midshipmen scored twice in a 1:04 span of the fourth quarter, tying the game 41-41 on Madden's 1-yard run with 7:23 left, after a fumble by Robinson at the Hawaii 16. A fumble by running back Avion Weaver at the Hawaii 21 on the previous series led to a 6-yard score by Raheem Lambert.

Robinson connected for two third-quarter touchdowns to Channon Harris _ one for 7 yards, one for 8 yards _ to give Hawaii a 41-27 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Robinson finished 37 of 63 for 530 yards, a single-game record for Hawaii. Carter had 10 catches for 208 yards.

In two seasons as a starter, Robinson has 5,784 yards, passing Garrett Gabriel on Hawaii's all-time list. Gabriel totaled 5,631 yards.

Madden finished with 150 yards rushing for Navy, even though he missed all of the third quarter and five minutes of the fourth quarter with leg cramps. Lambert had 120 yards rushing for the Midshipmen.

Hawaii led 27-24 at halftime, after a wild second quarter in which each teams scored 24 points. Robinson passed for 374 yards in the first half, while Navy ran for 254 yards.

Before the game, Hawaii agreed to accept a bid to the Oahu Bowl, where they likely will play Oregon State.
