Robert Luongo’s career as a whole looks a lot better than just 41 goals saved above expected, to the point where he could challenge Lundqvist for the title of “best goalie of the 21st century”.
…Buuuut for the first seven years of his career, advanced stats weren’t tracked. So, we have to use the next best thing is we are going to compare their careers completely.
That would be goals saved above average (GSAA). It’s not a 1-for-1 comparison, but beggars can’t be overfastidious.
Luongo’s first seven years add up to an awesome 172.7 goals saved above average. BUT if even if you add that one to his GSAx, it still doesn’t beat out Hernik Lundqvist if you account for his GSAA pre-2007 as well. In fact, the gap is still about as wide as Jonathan Quick’s entire career (~30 GSAx).
A breakdown of macro’s both their full career stats also favor Lundqvist. So without any disrespect to Luongo, there can only be one crown. And who more apt to wear it than a king?
