Society is in crisis. Is the mid-twentieth century European nightmare, in which financial crisis led to economic crisis, fiscal crisis, and violence, being repeated today? Gender is central to the crisis. The crisis – erupting in finance in 2007, and cascading through the economy, the fiscal, and the political – is leading to an increase in violence, especially against women. Gender shapes each cascade of the crisis. Yet, the significance of gender relations in this restructuring of the social system is often underestimated or oversimplified. An alternative conceptualisation of gender at a macro level is needed. The gendering of the crisis means not a process of ‘refamilialisation’ in which women are pushed out of production back into reproduction, but rather a critical turning point in the trajectory of the public gender regime from a more social democratic form to a more neoliberal form. Violence should be included alongside political economy in the theorisation of society and social change. Understanding the restructuring of the EU, of which Brexit is part, requires an analysis of gender. There are alternative futures. Sylvia Walby OBE is Distinguished Professor of Sociology, UNESCO Chair of Gender Research, and Director of the Violence and Society UNESCO Centre at Lancaster University. She is the recipient of the Anneliese Maier Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation, 2018-2023. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, UK; and Chairs the Sociology Sub-Panel for HEFCE REF 2021. She was the founding President of the European Sociological Association. She has published on theories of society in Globalization and Inequalities: Complexity and Contested Modernities (Sage 2009) and Crisis (Polity 2015).
