Waltz Clog along with me as we practice the Waltz Clog "Basic." The "Basic" step found in many percussive waltz clogs is different from the Basic in Appalachian (and contemporary) clogging. The rhythm is also different since it is danced to a waltz versus a reel. I typically count in with "1, 2, 3, go, 2, 3" in a sing-songy waltzing kind of way or just with, "Go, two, three."

Here are some different ideas of words you could use:

Step shuffle step step

Or

Step shuffle rock step

Or (if you have a background in tap, you might say)

Step shuffle ball change

A "shuffle" is "brush, brush" with the ball of your foot striking the floor and making a percussive sound.

At faster speeds you will probably find yourself dancing on the balls of your feet more for this Basic, and technique-wise it does not have the same type of rise and fall that you find in an Appalachian clogging Basic. So rock (up) step (down) is not really accurate language in the waltz clog, but sometimes it is easier to start with language you're already familiar with.
