At Halfway Point, Nearly 65,000 People Have Signed Up for Summer Reading Program

Officials Encourage Readers to Reach 1,000 Points and Earn a Free Book
Story Highlights
• Almost 65,000 people of all ages have signed up at halfway point of Maricopa County Reads
• Number of people to reach 1,000 points through Week 4 up 30% compared with 2015
• ALL materials count (e.g., magazines), as does reading to others

PHOENIX, Ariz. – June 30, 2016 – A month after Maricopa County kicked off its Summer Reading Program, nearly 65,000 people have registered to participate. With four weeks left to go, County officials are encouraging people to reach the goal of earning 1,000 points and getting a free book.

“We’re glad to see so many people signing up for the program and our challenges,” said Clint Hickman, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 4. “Now it’s time to make sure you’re finishing what you started – log those minutes and finish strong.”

“We are proud of all of our readers for signing up for the Summer Reading Program,” said Cindy Kolaczynski, Director of the Maricopa County Library District. “Don’t forget to log your minutes so you can earn points for a free book. If someone reads to you, or you’re reading to others – maybe a younger sibling – that counts. And you don’t have to just read books—it can be magazines, online articles, even information on a cereal box!”

This year’s theme is On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!, which focuses on sports and fitness topics along with challenging participants to exercise their minds by reading at least 20 minutes a day (#read20az).

Through August 1, participants can log their summer reading activities to earn points toward a free Chipotle meal at 500 points (while supplies last) and a free book of their choice from an online marketplace at 1,000 points. Participants can earn points just for reading (1 minute = 1 point), but also for attending library events, completing online challenges, and participating in community experiences. They can also earn badges for these activities, and keep a healthy competition with family and friends to see who can log the most time this summer.
