In this Grandma’s Thoughts episode, we go back to the olden days of Tamil Nadu when solar and lunar eclipses were seen not just as astronomical events, but as powerful spiritual and cultural moments. Back in the 60s and 70s, people followed unique rituals and traditions during சூரிய கிரகணம் (solar eclipse) and சந்திர கிரகணம் (lunar eclipse).

👵 In those days:

Food was avoided during the eclipse 🌿

Pregnant women were told to stay indoors 🚪

Temples would remain closed during the eclipse ⛔

Once the eclipse ended, a holy bath 🛁 and cleaning rituals were performed 🌸

These practices were not merely superstition, but were rooted in cultural beliefs, health practices, and astronomy mixed with faith. Many of us still remember how the entire village would sit together, waiting for the shadow to pass, sharing stories from Puranas, and watching nature transform during the eclipse. 🌗

The eerie silence during an eclipse…

The way elders narrated stories of Rahu & Ketu swallowing the sun and moon 🌑🐍

The excitement and fear children had watching the eclipse through bowls of water or sooted glass!

“அந்த காலத்தில் சூரிய சந்திர கிரகணங்கள் வந்தால் வீட்டிலே எல்லாரும் சேர்ந்து பூஜை செய்வது, சமைத்த உணவை வைக்காமல் இருப்பது, பிறகு நல்ல நீராடி சுத்தம் செய்வது – எல்லாம் ஒரு கலாச்சாரம் தான். ராகு கேது கதை கேட்டு குழந்தைகளாக இருந்த நம்மால் சந்திரன் சூரியன் மறைந்துவிடும் என்று நினைத்திருப்போம்!”
