Last winter was a bumper season for zodiac moths. There were hundreds flying over the rainforest canopy and along the tree line where the rainforest meets the beach. They were everywhere. The adult moths are responsible for ensuring reproduction of the species happens. Female zodiac moths emit a pheromonal attractant. Male zodiac moths are able to pick up a females scent using their feathered antennae. The females scent can travel quite long distances. After mating the male will look for another female to fertilise and the female will fly off to find a leaf from the species host vine, where she will deposit her eggs. By spring I saw adult zodiac moths dropping from the sky into rainforest creek pools and onto the rainforest floor, suggesting the bumper season for these zodiac moths was coming to a close.
