Hello Games has recently added a mini Halloween update into No Man’s Sky. They have added a new item called Tainted Metal. This is to replace the currency for the Scrap Dealer, which could be due to a certain exploit where people can buy tons of pugneum and sell it for upgrades and sell it for Nanites. To make players interested in this new type of item, Hello Games added a few Halloween items into the Scrap Dealer shop, a few decals, and a special customization head called the Human Flesh Helmet which can be bought for 3,200 Tainted Metal.

Tainted Metal can be retrieved by going onto Desolated Freighters and completing the tasks the game gives you. Once you complete those tasks, the game will ask you to either give the quest items you got to the Scrap Dealer, or the Mission Board. Giving it to the Scrap Dealer, he will award you with a random amount of Tainted Metal. Giving it to the Mission Board, you will only receive a faction reputation point given the dominant system you are in.
