The 2008 Summer Olympics took place from August 8 to 24 in Beijing, the capital of China. It was the first Summer Games to be held in China. Beijing was awarded the bid by the International Olympic Committee on July 13, 2001. 204 nations took part in the Games, surpassing the record of 202 nations from Athens 2004.
There were 302 competitions in 28 sports, including 166 for men, 127 for women, three mixed and six open competitions. US swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals and set seven world records in the process. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won three gold medals and broke three world records. In total, China won 51 gold medals. The Games in Beijing were characterized by numerous world records in athletics and swimming and represented a superlative in many respects. 🏅
