If you own a track machine you know one of the most important parts are the final drives. They happen to also be one of the most expensive parts on an excavator, bulldozer, or other machine with tracks.

Final drives take a lot of abuse. For that reason it is vitally important to maintain the final drives by always checking the oil. The biggest reason for final drive failure is low oil.

Main bearings are a top part to fail on a final drive. A squealing final drive usually means a bearing is about to fail.

A leaking, hot final drive also is a warning sign the final drive is on its last legs.

Gear teeth should be flat. As they wear, they will get sharp. When that happens, it is time to replace the coupler.

Upper and lower shafts will also get warn down. The splines will wear out. If they are failing there will be a lot of play as the splines begin to lose contact with the gears.

It's recommended to replace the motor when you change out the final drive.

When a final drive has a major failure, many owners try to avoid investing in a new final drive by getting parts to fix the one that has failed.
