STORYLINE:
Peru's Catholics celebrated Palm Sunday with a procession that commemorates the Christian belief of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

In Lima, Catholic faithful took part in the procession that included images of Our Lady of Sorrows, Jesus, the Virgin of the Anguish, Lord of the Sanctuary of Santa Catalina, among others.

Some of the images were brought from the outskirts of Lima to participate in the procession that takes place every year outside the Cathedral of Lima.

Catholic faithful walked alongside the images with songs, incense and the traditional palms that are blessed on Palm Sunday.

In the biblical Palm Sunday story, a cheering crowd greeted Jesus along the road.

Some spread their garments on the ground; others threw down leafy branches they had cut from the fields.

In the Gospel of John, they are branches from palms, a tree that symbolized victory and triumph.

After the procession, the Bible says Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple.

For Catholics in Peru, the yearly procession is an event they don't want to miss.

"One comes to Mass every Sunday. That's the faith we have. The Angelus (prayer to the Virgin Mary) was taught to us since childhood. I am already 80 years old, so whenever I can, I come to the procession,” said Teresa Figueroa, a Catholic faithful from Lima.
