Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon delivered the keynote at the 25th annual Automobil-Elektronik Kongress, emphasizing the importance of 5G in the future of the connected car.

In his AEK speech, Amon says that "We need to think about the digital transformation of the automobile in the same way you approach designing a car. And just as you begin with a chassis and a drivetrain for a car, you also need a digital chassis, which requires technology that can enable all these capabilities as a system."

Automobiles are changing at a rapid pace, and accelerated digital transformation is impacting business models for automotive companies as much as the actual driving experience. Advanced compute capabilities, AI, and constant access to the cloud — enabled by 5G connectivity — are enabling new automotive experiences.

Just as roads are essential infrastructure for transportation, 5G will be essential for the future of the automotive industry and the connected car — from the factory, to the dealership, and eventually the daily commute. Mission critical automotive intelligence capabilities — like identifying a pedestrian, or recognizing when a traffic light turns red or green — will rely on ultra-fast and ultra-reliable 5G connectivity technology.

In time, demand for more powerful and efficient computing in vehicles will increase. The connected car of the future will be more immersive, intelligent, efficient, and autonomous. The digital cockpit of tomorrow will feature multiple large screens with personal infotainment systems, mobile app integration, enhanced navigation capabilities that are integrated with transportation systems, mobile hotspots, and more. Augmented reality, premium audio, smart mirrors, and AI-driven experiences will be the norm.

As consumer expectations grow, the ability to offer new capabilities and update systems over the course of a car’s life cycle will be essential — and 5G will make that possible. With cars that are always connected, automotive companies can stay in touch with customers over the life cycle of a vehicle — and gain access to better data and analytics as a result. The car itself will become a service station, and automotive companies will be able to offer new capabilities and services over time. The potential for service revenue may be greater than the initial sale price of the vehicle.
