Karpatri Maharaj was a revered saint of India who belonged to the Dasnami Sampradaya of Sanatan Dharma. He founded the Dharam Sangh in Varanasi (Kashi), which led the movement to ban cow slaughter in India.

In 1966, Karpatri Maharaj led a combined rally of various sampradays like Madhavacharya, Vallabhacharya, Lingayat, Ramanujacharya, Nathpanthis ( Yogi Adityanath's Gorakhnath sampradaya) towards the Parliament. The incident that occurred next led to Indira Gandhi assassination by her bodyguards after Operation Blue Star against the Khalistanis and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
