"Careless Love" is one of the first traditional blues songs, and has roots that trace back to Appalachia in the early 19th century. Some musicologists suggest that it is a mispronunciation of "Kelly's Love," an Irish ballad brought to the Appalachian Mountains by Scotch-Irish immigrants.

Buddy Bolden is known to have performed "Careless Love" regularly in New Orleans around the turn of the twentieth century. Though it's exact origins are unknown, it has become one of the most recorded songs in the jazz and blues idioms, and has also been performed as folk, country, and pop. Hundreds of artists have sung "Careless Love" including: Bessie Smith, Pete Seegar, Big Joe Turner, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Lonnie Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Dave Van Ronk, Leadbelly, Odetta, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Madeleine Peyroux, Bob Dylan, Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, Skip James, Frankie Lane, Harry Connick, Jr., Jr. Mance, Bunk Johnson, Dr. John, Ray Charles, and many more.

This is my own arrangement, and I recorded this video on the same day as "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise," "Avalon," and "St. Louis Blues." This was the second take. There are many variations of the lyrics, and I chose to sing what I think are the most common verses:

Lyrics:

Careless Love
(Traditional)

Love, oh love oh careless love
Love, oh love oh careless love
Love, oh love oh careless love
See what careless love has done

I once was happy as can be
My days were bright, sunny and free
Then you came along to do me wrong
and you brought your careless love to me

I love my father and my mother, too
I love my sister and my brother, too
I love my father, my mother, my sister and my brother, too
But I'd leave them all just to go with you

I cried last night and the night before
I cried last night and the night before
I cried last night and the night before
I'm gonna cry tonight, then I'll cry no more

Love, oh love oh careless love
Love, oh love oh careless love
Love, oh love oh careless love
See what careless love has done
